Sampling of Lubricating Oils
Oil sampling is a method of collecting a volume of fluid from lubricated or hydraulic machinery or from a barrel for the purpose of oil analysis.
Used oil analysis is often made to determine, whether the fluid is suitable for further use under existing or modified conditions or it should be withdrawn from service.
When collecting a used oil sample, it is highly important to make sure that procedures are used to minimize sample disturbance during and after the sampling process.
Regular analysis of used lubricant can act as a preventive maintenance tool.
Sampling – DOs and DONTs
Sampling has to be done on a regular basis in order to achieve statistically valid information. The frequency of sampling depends largely on experience, and adjustments can be made on the basis of the results of previous samples
Sample when the machine is operating, or within 30 minutes of operation.
Always sample from same point.
Immediately label the sample to prevent mix up.
Drain off dead leg oil/water/debris before sampling.
DO NOT sample immediately after an oil change or makeup.
